Trip to Mexico: Riviera Maya

So, first off this post is really late but I just could not bring myself to talk about spring break once I had returned to the arctic tundra that is South Bend, Indiana. But, in an effort to ignore the snow storm that is happening right outside my window I decided to reflect on my most recent vacation.

This year for spring break, my boyfriend and I decided to go to Riviera Maya, Mexico. Usually we go down to see his family in Florida, but it was our three year anniversary so we decided to do something special. We booked a room at an all inclusive, something that I had never done before. And now, I am not sure that I ever want to do anything else. It was so nice to just be able to lock our wallets up for the whole week and not have to worry about anything. The drinks were amazing, the food was amazing, and it was nice to not have to worry about the cost. We were able to just completely relax without any financial worry, which for him in his first year at his job and me as a senior in college is not something that is achieved easily.

In the mornings we would get up and go and eat a quick breakfast at the buffet. They had anything and everything that I could imagine, and bottles of champagne just sitting out for the taking. It was incredible. Then, we would head down to the beach so that we could claim the best chairs to get a view of the ocean and watch the various beach volleyball games that popped up throughout the day. Once it got too hot or we started to burn we would move up to the pool so that we could stay in the shade a little more. This did not stop us from getting burned though! But with our pasty skin there was no preventing it.

We decided to splurge a little one day and booked an excursion that included a catamaran ride, snorkeling on the reef, and a deck party on the boat. The whole trip was amazing. When we were snorkeling a sea turtle literally ran into me! That was a little bit scary because sea turtles are not small, in fact they are freaking huge! We also saw a nurse shark and approximately 1 billion fish of all shapes and sizes. I loved it!

Things I learned on this trip: (1) get to global entry pass. Coming back into the U.S. was a mess. The customs lines were huge and if we had that pass we could have skipped it all. Plus it comes with TSA precheck and I'm all about not having to take my shoes off in the airport! (2) All inclusive are amazing, and I would 100% suggest one to anyone who is fine with spending most of their time at the resort. I found that there was plenty to do and I was never bored, but I know that that isn't for everyone. (3) bring about half as many clothes as you think you need and you will still overpack. I think I wore maybe 3 different outfits the whole week because I spent most of my time in my swimsuit. I don't know how I always end up packing so much, but it is a slight problem. (4) Riviera Maya is a beautiful and wonderful destination that should be on everyone's travel list!
